Concerns and Experiences with Yelp

Comparisons to Unethical Practices

The tactics employed by Yelp appear reminiscent of those once used by the Mafia in earlier times. For further insight, it is suggested to watch “Billion Dollar Bully,” a documentary that explores these practices.

Issues with Yelp Business Pages

Yelp created business pages for me without my permission or involvement. Although I received genuine 5-star reviews from real customers, Yelp removed them, claiming that the reviews were not reliable.

Advertising Pressure and Sales Tactics

Shortly after removing my positive reviews, Yelp contacted me and tried to persuade me to advertise with them. They quoted advertising fees ranging from $600 to nearly $2,000 per month, suggesting that my reviews would be restored if I agreed. When I explained that this was not within my budget, their salespeople persisted, frequently calling and pressuring me.

Impact on Business Reputation

As a result of refusing their advertising offers, my business now appears to have no star ratings at all on Yelp. Despite this, sales representatives continue to call, repeating the message that advertising with Yelp would ensure my reviews would remain visible.

Reflection and Personal Experience

This pattern of behavior feels no different than protection rackets of the past. A simple online search for “billion dollar bully” will reveal similar stories from other small business owners. As an honest, big-hearted 61-year-old who has lived in Jacksonville all my life, I have always been dedicated to my customers—and always will be.
